With deep sadness I share the passing today of UNC, our beloved forest green 2011 LR4, to Carvana in Schaumburg, IL. UNC (our license plate which stands for University of North Carolina),was a cherished member of the family, a steadfast and fun travelling companion who faithfully traversed roads with us for thirteen unforgettable years. This loyal stead, with over 128,000 miles etched into its journey, has reached the end of its road.

UNC was more than just a vehicle. Lovingly adorned with many marks of a life well-lived, it was a vessel of memories and adventures. Its faded dashboard and sticky seats bore witness to countless miles of laughter and conversation, accompanied by the gentle bobbing and swaying of a faithful dashboard Jesus bobblehead. The sandy remnants from beach trips whispered tales of sun-soaked days at the lake, while the dog hair, a testament to loyal companionship, adorned its interior like a badge of honor.

Stickers representing every sport our children played, the colleges they attended, as well as many random “Martha/Mom” related things adorned its proud exterior, telling the story of a family’s shared experiences and many quirks. Despite the wear and tear of time, with a rear bumper threatening to part ways and occasional reluctance to shift into reverse, UNC remained a steadfast ally on our journeys,

Oh, the miles we’ve traveled together! Through countless road trips from Chicago to Boston, Cedarville MI, and Wilmington NC, as well as daily school drop-offs and pickups, UNC was a steadfast companion, navigating both the highways of our adventures and the winding roads of our everyday lives with grace and reliability — most of the time. UNC made the trip to Devils Head where we almost ran out of gas on a 9 below zero day, as well as the trip to Makajawan Boy Scout Camp, with the stench of 5 smelly Scouts and their gear. The annual trips to the one price for all you can fit in your car pumpkin patch, the Scout Hockey Christmas tree sale and the McDonald’s drive through where the dogs got their annual birthday ice cream cone, left permanent vestiges in impossible to reach places. UNC even “graduated” high school with our daughter, decorated in posters and balloons for the Class of 2020 Covid Drive Through Graduation ceremony. UNC was not just a mode of transportation but a vessel for our cherished family traditions and celebrations.

As we reflect on the soundtrack of our lives, this Land Rover stands as a silent witness to the melodies that accompanied our travels. From the twang of Brad Paisley to the island rhythms of Kenny Chesney, from the lively tunes of Vacation Bible School CDs to the loud sing-alongs of the Hamilton soundtrack, its speakers echoed with the soundtrack of our lives.

And who could forget the permanent dog drool adorning its left rear door, a testament to the boundless love and loyalty of our furry companions? It’s a mark UNC wore with pride, a symbol of the unconditional love that filled every journey, every adventure.

The spirit of our beloved UNC lives on in the countless moments of joy, laughter, and togetherness it facilitated. As we say goodbye, we hold onto the memories forged on its worn leather seats and within the confines of its rugged frame, grateful for the unwavering companionship it provided.

Rest in peace, dear UNC. You will be truly and dearly missed. Your tireless service and unwavering loyalty will forever be cherished and remembered.
